Auto Insurance Requirements In The State of Delaware
Delaware Car Insurance
According to Delaware state laws, liability insurance is required of all drivers. This insurance helps cover the costs of damages or injuries you may have inflicted on others if you are responsible for an accident. You must carry evidence of insurance in your vehicle at all times. Your insurance must be provided when renewing your vehicle registration, when involved in a traffic collision, or as requested by law enforcement.
Car Insurance Requirements
Your policy must include at least the following minimum coverage limits:
- $25,000 for injury or death per person.
- $25,000 for total injury or death, per accident (if multiple people were injured in said accident).
- $10,000 for property damage, per accident.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
The state of Delaware also requires you to have personal injury protection (PIP), commonly known as “no-fault car insurance.”
While liability insurance helps you with costs associated with injury or damages to others in an accident you caused, PIP will help pay for your medical costs regardless of who caused the accident.
The minimum limit requirements for PIP in Delaware are:
- $15,000 for bodily injury to one person.
- $30,000 for bodily injury to multiple people involved in one accident.
PIP will also help pay up to $5,000 for funeral expenses.
NOTE: While Delaware law does not require you to have collision and comprehensive coverages, you may have to purchase both as part of your car’s finance or lease agreement. It is important to keep valid insurance, as the DMV is authorized to audit you at random.
Violations and Penalties
If you are caught and convicted in Delaware for driving without car insurance, you face the following penalties:
- A minimum $1,500 fine upon your 1st offense.
- A minimum $3,000 fine for each subsequent offense occurring within 3 years.
If you are having a difficult time finding car insurance in the open market, you can apply for insurance through the Delaware Automobile Insurance Plan (DAIP).
